This is a plague of current philosophy, particularly anything relating to the philosophy of science (i.e. philosophy of mind). In order to have a understanding of mind one really must have 3 PhDs (neuroscience, psychology, philosophy). Even if one is studying only a small area in continental philosophy the reading is still over capacity, just to get a grounding in Nietzsche's own work requires several reading of at least 17 books of his, in addition there were at least 9 books published on Nietzsche last year, not to mention the hundreds of articles each year that come out which use and abuse Nietzsche. If being up to date on one Philosopher is so hard, how can one possibly study a "field" of research which includes many people?Join me on Twitter or Facebook for updates. Medical School Admission Test: Now Includes Ethics
Association of American Medical Colleges to revise the medical school admissions test to incorporate a hefty dose of social science, and ethics. This seems to suggest that medical minded students should take a medical ethics course. Departments would be advised to offer a medical ethics course. Based on acceptances I have heard it argued that one has a better chance doing a philosophy pre-med than biology. Join me on Twitter or Facebook for updates. Survey to Rank Philosophy Journals
Rank order the philosophy journals below in terms of the quality of work that typically appears in these journals. The survey is limited to "general" journals, that is, journals that publish in multiple sub-fields of philosophy.

Visiting Prospective PhD Programs
When you get that first letter of acceptance it is an overwhelming feeling of relaxation and a quelling of anxiety. Yet, you should start thinking about visiting the departments you were accepted to. Some departments can be quite different than they are presented on their website. Here are some non-philosopher observations

The Forgotten Student: Has Higher Education Stiffed Its Most Important Client?
An interesting perspective but I'm unsure it is correct:
" Universities should provide their most important clients, students, with a quality liberal arts or professional education at a reasonable cost for a finite period of time. Unfortunately, many universities do not prioritize their clients' educational needs. College professors are neither trained nor rewarded for excellence in the classroom. Incentive structures and university culture reinforce other activities, such as research, service on committees, and graduate education. "More HERE

In Arizona, Censoring Questions About Race
In recent weeks, the state of Arizona has intensified its attack in its schools on an entire branch of study — critical race theory. Books and literature that, in the state’s view, meet that definition have been said to violate a provision in the state’s law that prohibits lessons “promoting racial resentment.” Officials are currently bringing to bear all their influence in the public school curriculum, going so far as to enter classrooms to confiscate books and other materials and to oversee what can be taught.
