This has actually become more successful than I thought it would be. The site was started as a reaction to the APA's badly done website and their unreliable JFP (Jobs For Philosophers). It seems to be proving it self not only as a reactionary movement to wake up the APA but a viable alternative.

How do Graduate Councils Work?

This is an open question to anyone who could share information about the topic. I'm trying to set up a graduate council in my new MA program to address some issues that the students are having. As an undergraduate, there was a graduate council at my institution but I was never informed about how it worked. The general idea is that there would be an open dialogue between students about the program and then the results of that would be passed on to the chair in an organized fashion. Aside from that, I am unsure of how they work and would greatly appreciate any information on how other institutions organized something like this.

• So perhaps this is old news but I just found it. Evil Twin comics put out a bunch of comics on philosophy and while the accuracy is debatable, the enjoyment is free flowing. If comics are your thing, also check out Logicomix (about Russel), sadly Logicomix is not free.

Philosophy Taught in Prison

Philosophy is now being taught in the prison system? This is an interesting development. It's not currently accredited but there is a movement to get it there. Aside from the value to convicts, this could create some news state funded positions, at least for those who like a bit of excitement. According to Wikipedia, there are 2,292,133 adults currently incarcerated (2009) and a further 86,927 juveniles (2007) searving sentences in the US. Not to be completely insensitive  that is a large potential student body.  Full article HERE

A Criticism of the Method of Scholarly Publication

I ran across this thanks to Leiter. Its an interesting article on how academic publishing is really taking advantage of academics. It seems like Open Journals could be one solution. 

"[in] an article by George Monbiot on the economics of academic publishing, regarding journals in particular, with the suggestive (but spot-on) title of 'Academic publishers make Murdoch look like a socialist'. As well said by another tweep, the article "will shock everyone except academics". Indeed, none of it is news to us, and the bottom-line is pretty simple: academic publishers get everybody to work for them for free (authors, peer-reviewers, most of the editing work), and then go on to charge ridiculous amounts of money for journal subscriptions. And yet, we are stuck with them, because the discipline depends crucially on journal publishing."

Effectiveness of Track Programs: University of West Georgia

The following is a response from Robert Lane, Associate Professor of philosophy at West Georgia University. It's a response to some questions I had regarding their Pre-law track program. 

Some interesting tid bits: over 1/3 of their philosophy students are Pre-law. 15 have already graduated, 6 of which applied to law. No other faculty were required, and no classes had to be added. 

This is very close to the story about University of Alabama's Pre-Law Track program. Basically they were able to increase enrollment, with no major change to their department structure. Perhaps a shift into track programs will not increase jobs or solve other problems as I had hoped. It defiantly seems like a viable plan for increasing enrollment and by so doing increasing departmental funds.
