Humanities Make Money

I found this article interesting. basically it suggests that humanities make a considerable profit. While they don't pull in as much grant money as the sciences, he suggests, they actually run at a greater percentage of profit vs. cost.

He also suggests that this fact has been hushed up by the sciences which have a large control factor over the bureaucracy of university systems. He suggests that the myth that humanities are unprofitable is partially continued because of the power position that the sciences hold in the university.

(I'm still very curious about how departments are assigned funding from the university. Could someone tell me how this works?)

Robert N. Watson is a professor of English. This op-ed originally appeared in the Chronicle of Higher Education on Sunday, March 21, 2010.
